From just an idea, dreamed up on a beach in Costa Rica, the Absa Cape
Epic has evolved into the biggest mountain bike stage race in the world,
raced by athletes from 82 countries and watched by millions all
over the world.

technology and lifestyle eyewear since 1975, will be joining in many of
the country’s and some of the world’s best cyclists in looking beyond
their limits and igniting the fire of true sportsmanship as
approximately 600 teams of two compete in this tough 8 day race.

With the most talented riders identified, the Academy’s first training
camp was held at Mankele MTB Lodge near Nelspruit from 16-19 January
2012. 22 development riders participated in this three-day event.
Apart from hard riding, technical workshops were also presented and
riders were briefed on important information like discipline, proper
nutrition and teamwork.

Telkom Business, a headline sponsor of the Absa Cape Epic, will sponsor
the Masters Category of this year’s event with the goal of making the
Telkom Business Masters blue jersey the most coveted jersey in
international Masters mountain biking. To be eligible to ride in this category, both riders have to be 40 years or older in the year the event takes place.

The Summer heat is here in full force, and proper hydration while on the bike is now very important. There’s plenty of opportunity now for hot weather
training before the 2012 Absa Cape Epic to put a hydration strategy into
practice and to see how your body reacts when the temperature rises. Woolworths Dietician and 2012 Absa Cape Epic participant, Maryke van Zyl, provides some tips for a proper hydration strategy.

Adrien Niyonshuti is the survivor of 7 siblings after the Rwandan genocide slaughter of 1994. In 2011, he was selected to represent his home country in the 2012 Olympic games riding the mountain bike cross-country event. To say his journey is a remarkable one would be a staggering understatement.

Twenty five riders, current and past along with other mountain bike fans piled into the Pedal Studio in Putney, London, to meet and listen to the current Absa Cape Epic 2011 Champion and UCI world number 1, Sally Bigham, present the Absa Cape Epic 2012 Route launch.

Swiss participants of this year's Absa Cape Epic and some "greenhorns" joining the Absa Cape Epic in 2012, met at the Swiss Cape Epic Réunion, next to the beautiful Lake of Constance, in Switzerland. The Swiss Réunion took place for the 4th time in a row, organised with lots of passion by our famous waterpoint volunteer, Maya Kägi.

Fifteen kids from the JAG Riders programme at Bergsig Primary in Bonteheuwel spent some one-on-one time with MTB racing champions, Karl Platt and Stefan Sahm. Platt and Sahm, who together make up the Bulls team, won the Absa Cape Epic in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

The new route was officially unveiled on Tuesday in Cape Town, but it was the official Route Launch Dinner in Johannesburg that had the sponsors, media and riders rubbing shoulders with the best riders in the world.
